SYDNEY

Australia's largest outdoor art gallery has started in the downtown area of Melbourne, the second biggest city in the nation in a bid to entice people back to city's central area and boost the local economy, the city's council said on Wednesday.

The free exhibition is expected to become a major attraction over summer for people to stop by and appreciate the creativity from Melbourne's artistic community demonstrated on empty shops, businesses, windows, building exteriors and laneways within part of Bourke Street in the city center.

The gallery featuring 26 contemporary Melbourne artists will reflect on Bourke Street's architecture, streetscape and history and can be found between Spring Street and Exhibition Street.

"We've collaborated with property owners, business owners and artists to create Australia's largest outdoor art gallery," Melbourne's Lord Mayor  Sally Capp said.

"Our creative sector is a crucial part of what makes Melbourne great and it will play a key role in revitalising our city and kickstarting our economy."

The exhibition will run from Dec. 15 2020 until Feb. 28 2021.
