BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

The Intermediate Court yesterday sentenced three Thai nationals for sexually exploiting a 17-year-old country woman to lengthy jail terms, fines and whipping, wrapping up the trafficking and smuggling of persons case.

The 47-year-old female accused received four years imprisonment and a fine of $30,000, or 30 months' jail in default of payment.

The 46-year-old man was sentenced to four years' jail, four strokes of the cane and a $10,000 fine, or 10 months' jail in default.

The 44-year-old man was sentenced to four years in jail, five strokes and a $20,000 fine, or jail for 20 months in default.

The defendants, whose anonymity is kept to protect the young Thai girl's' identity, pleaded guilty to five charges of exploiting the girl, living on part earnings of prostitution, exploitation of a trafficked person, letting to hire the girl for prostitution and exploiting her by transporting her to provide sexual services.

Judge Muhammed Faisal bin Pehin Dato Kefli heard from the prosecution- that the young victim asked for help with money as her father sustained injuries in a car accident.

She went into a deal with the 47-year-old female defendant who paid for her ticket, received her at the airport and sheltered her since her arrival on March 5, 2016.

She was offered a job as a prostitute on condition that she should pay $2,000 to the female defendant for airfare, accommodation, food and daily expenses.

The fee for the young victim's services was set at $30 for one engagement, of which the female defendant would receive $25.

The female defendant then asked the 46-year-old male defendant to look for customers who found interested parties leading to arrangements.

Between March 6 and 9, 2016, the 46-year-old male defendant arranged the "meetings," managed the earnings of the young victim, including passing the female defendant's share to her, and also receive commissions of $5 from the female defendant for every successful engagement by the young victim.

During these engagements, the 46-year-old male defendant had contacted the 44-year-old male defendant to transport the young victim and has received $10-15 from the female defendant personally or through the young victim at times.

Deputy Public Prosecutors Karen Tan and Vuina Song conducted the prosecution of the case.
