The resiliency and adaptability of the maritime industry is vital in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. While delivering a General Statement at the 32nd Regular Session of the International Maritime Organization, IMO Assembly via video conference, Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Abdul Mutalib bin Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Setia Dato Paduka Awang Haji Mohammad Yusof, Minister of Transport and Infocommunications shared on the need for high quality education, training and promotion of careers at sea to produce competent and qualified seafarers to keep vessels safe, protect the environment and keep international trade moving; and active work towards becoming a Party and implementing IMO instruments through respective legislation in order to enforce and better regulate the ports and maritime industry. Some 66 Heads of Delegation of IMO Member States delivered General Statements which touched upon efforts to enhance initiatives undertaken in the maritime industry in terms of safety of shipping, maritime security and maritime environment.
The 32nd IMO Assembly was officiated by Mr. Kitack Lim, Secretary-General of International Maritime Organization. The 32nd IMO Assembly will continue with the election for the new IMO Council for 2022-2023 on the 10th of December 2021 as well as the Technical Committee Session Meetings until the 15th of December 2021.
