MANILA

President Duterte appointed on Thursday, May 5, Police Lt. Gen. Vicente Danao as officer-in-charge of the Philippine National Police (PNP), to replace Gen. Dionardo Carlos who is set to retire on May 8.

Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Eduardo Año confirmed Duterte’s appointment.

“The President has just designated Ppolice Lt. Gen. Vicente Dupa Danao Jr as Officer In Charge of the Philippine National Police to replace Police Gen Dionardo Carlos who is retiring on 08 May 2022,” said Año.

Acting presidential spokesperson Sec. Martin Andanar said Danao will take over the leadership of the PNP on May 8.

“We are confident that General Danao will continue efforts to transform the PNP into a more dynamic and more professional organization performing its mandate of serving and protecting our people,” said Andanar.

Before the President’s announcement, Danao is holding two key positions in the PNP Command Group, the Deputy Chief for Operations, PNP’s number three post which he took over on Monday with the retirement of Lt. Gen. Ferdinand Divina; and, the Chief Directorial Staff, or the fourth highest position in the PNP.

Danao, a member of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) Class 1991, served as the director of the Police Regional Office 4A and the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) before he was designated as the PNP’s Chief of Directorial Staff.

He was once assigned to Davao City, an assignment which made him close to Duterte who was then its mayor.

Año said the appointment of Danao is pivotal and timely especially of the ongoing efforts to ensure peaceful and credible elections.

As acting Chief PNP, Año said Danao’s first order of the day is to ensure that all security preparations are in place and all police units are mobilized and on alert so that the country will have a peaceful, orderly, and honest elections.

“As commander of the National Security Task Force on National and Local Elections, Danao is more than cut out for the job of ensuring a safe and peaceful elections as he has been involved in the planning and security preparations for the elections since day one,’’ said Año.

“His designation as PNP OIC will not affect the ongoing security preparations being implemented by the PNP as he will be able to provide good leadership and direction to the entire police force for them to be able to fulfill their peacekeeping role in this important time of our country’s history,’’ he added.
