At least 8,027 schools were affected while 35 were damaged following the destructive magnitude 7.0 earthquake that struck northwestern Luzon on July 27, the Department of Education (DepEd) reported on Thursday morning, July 28.

Of the damaged schools, 11 were from Central Luzon, nine from Cagayan Valley, eight from Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), and seven were from Ilocos Region.

“The initial estimated cost for the earthquake’s reconstruction and rehabilitation of damaged schools is at 228.5 million,” said DepEd.

Meanwhile, apart from the damage sustained by schools, the department also disclosed that at least 8,027 schools were “affected” by the quake. DepEd assured the public that it will continue to assess the situation to ensure the safety and welfare of the learners and educators.

The destructive quake, initially recorded with a magnitude measuring 7.3 and was later downgraded to 7.0, occurred three kilometers northwest of Tayum, Abra around 8:43 a.m. on Wednesday, July 27. The major quake shook parts of Luzon, including Metro Manila, said state seismologists.
