BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

Start from October 2, members of the public can look forward to a relaxing stroll on the streets of Bandar Seri Begawan (BSB) on Sundays, from 6am to 10am, without having to worry about vehicles on the road.

The `Bandarku Ceria - Hari Tanpa Kereta' (My Happy City - A Day Without Cars) project is the latest initiative from the Brunei Government that seeks to promote a healthy lifestyle through recreational exercise, while reducing the country's carbon footprint.

The Deputy Chairman of the BSB Municipal Board, Dr Hajah Mas Suriaia Wati binti Haji Abdul Hamid, told the Bulletin that "among the government's priorities is the wellbeing of the people. The initiative was made through various ministries to further promote Bandar Seri Begawan as a more vibrant city, a place where the public and local communities can convene. It was from there that the idea of a car-free day came about".

The roads that will be closed off for four hours on Sundays are Jalan Sultan Omar 'Ali Saifuddien, Jalan Stoney, Jalan Masjid Omar 'Ali Saifuddien, Jalan McArthur, Jalan James Pearce, Jalan Pemancha, Jalan Elizabeth II and Jalan Pretty.

Dr Hajah Mas Suriaia Wati added that "the initiative is also part of the many events marking Bandar Seri Begawan's recent appointment as Asean's City of Culture for 2016-2017. It is hoped that one day, Bandar Seri Begawan will be a green city, free of traffic, where people can walk on the streets and cycle freely".

She also lauded the participation of the private sector in boosting Bandar Seri Begawan as a vibrant and dynamic capital. "We wanted the private sector to play a role through this government initiative by attracting small and medium enterprises (SMEs), aerobic enthusiasts and associations for recreational activities."

During the four hours, aerobic sessions will be held along Dermaga Diraja, together with other activities such as car boot sales, a children's corner, art exhibitions and displays by the AIDS council.

Meanwhile, cycling and running activities will take place along Jalan Perdana Menteri, starting from Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Complex to Jalan Tasek, from 6am to 10am.

Members of the public are welcome to take part, in support of a healthy lifestyle for all, one of the main objectives of Vision 2035.
