ALOR SETAR

Heavy rains ease in Australia's New South Wales, flood warnings...

Continuous rain since the early morning has caused flash floods in some low-lying areas around Baling here on Sunday (Oct 9).

Among the affected areas were Baling, Pulai, Siong and Kupang sub-districts.

A Civil Defence Force (APM) spokesperson said a total of 81 families were affected but no temporary relief center (PPS) were opened as of 9am on Sunday (Oct 9).

"Heavy rain since early morning has caused Sungai Ketil and Sungai Kupang to overflow and seep into villages," he said.

Among the villages that are affected are Kampung Padang Empang, Kampung Dusun,Kampung Iboi, Kampung Bendang Sera, Sungai Batu, Seberang Pekan, Lubuk Pedati, Belakang Masjid Baling, Taman Bayu Indah , Taman Berlian , Kampung Tok Weng, and Kampung Tok Mat Ali.

He said currently Sungai Ketil were monitored closely by APM and villagers were advised to be relocated if the situation worsened.

Baling experienced several flash flood incidents that were believed to be triggered by deforestation and uncertain weather.

On July 4 the floods and water surge phenomenon affected 12 villages in Baling including Kampung Iboi and Kampung Masjid Iboi.

The flood also claimed three lives, including a pregnant woman.
