The North Sumatra administration plans to highlight the province's traditional woven fabrics when it hosts the National Press Day celebration on Feb. 9.

Nawal Lubis, chair of the National Handicraft Council North Sumatra chapter, said the council will gather traditional fabrics enterprises and crafters to feature the songket (woven fabric) of various tribes including the Batubara, Toba, Karo, Mandailing, Pakpak, Angkola and Simalungun.

“The songket will be worn as the special dress for the event, both for men and women,” said Nawal, who is the wife of North Sumatra Governor Edy Rahmayadi.

She said that President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo would wear clothing inspired by the various cultures of the province.

The province’s chapter of the Indonesian Journalists Association (PWI) said the event would also be attended by representatives from up to 30 countries.

These countries include Azerbaijan, Japan, Malaysia, Morocco, the Netherlands, Russia, Singapore and the United Kingdom.

“Representatives from 20 countries have confirmed their participation,” PWI regional chapter chair Farianda Sinik said.

Farianda said the representatives included ambassadors, journalists and the Confederation of ASEAN Journalists. (dre)
