His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam then attended the Retreat Session of the 43rd ASEAN Summit held at the Jakarta Convention Centre. Accompanying His Majesty was His Royal Highness Prince 'Abdul Mateen.
During the Retreat Session, His Majesty in his titah expresses concern on the intense competition among major regional and global powers, that could lead to misunderstandings and miscalculations that would further escalate regional tensions, as well as may affect the continued growth and prosperity achieved over decades.
In this regard, His Majesty emphasises that ASEAN should take a unified stance to uphold Centrality to remain relevant and maintain regional peace and prosperity; and that ASEAN should continue to represent the platform for cooperation and remain neutral amidst major power competition. His Majesty adds that taking sides will only weaken regional architecture.
To this end, His Majesty expresses appreciation for Indonesia's efforts to implement the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific, including convening the ASEAN Indo-Pacific Forum that brings together ASEAN partners for further collaboration which shows ASEAN's commitment to an open, transparent and inclusive regional architecture.
In concluding the titah, His Majesty commends Indonesia as Chair of ASEAN and countries neighbouring Myanmar for their efforts throughout the year in undertaking dialogue and consultation with all relevant parties which has resulted in some positive developments in Myanmar, in which such engagements are encouraged and constructive national dialogue among all stakeholders in Myanmar must be emphasised.
His Majesty also expresses the view that such engagements are in line with the Five-Point Consensus which is aimed at helping Myanmar find a long-term and inclusive solution that is Myanmar-owned and Myanmar-led. At the session, discussion among the leaders were focused on the implementation of the Five Point Consensus as well as the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific.
