The 'Spectacle 2016: Art and Design Graduation Show' was officially opened yesterday at the Chancellor Hall of Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD). Organised as part of the Art and Creative Technology (ACT) programme under the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS), it was launched by the event's guest of honour and Assistant Vice-Chancellor (Global Affairs) of UBD, Dr. Joyce Teo Siew Yan. Also viewing the exhibition yesterday were invited VIPs, as well as parents and friends of UBD students.

The event began with a recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah and Doa Selamat, followed by opening remarks from Dayangku Fatin Afifah binti Pengiran Haji Md Tahir, Co-Director of the graduation show committee, who highlighted that the exhibition showcases the creative potential and determination of the third cohort of 40 final-year ACT majors.

He further shared that the art and design works this year cover a variety of themes, including traditional arts, contemporary designs, ethical values, social issues, self-identity, personal growth, cultural heritage, nature preservation, aesthetic beauty and entrepreneurship.

Meanwhile, the guest of honour in her speech said that through cultural appreciation, inventive imagination, and artistic explorations, the 40 ACT students have applied their abilities to create new means for expressing views and concepts involving a range of subjects. "This exhibition reflects not only the creativity and critical thinking of each individual student, but their collective consciousness on the beautiful world around them as well," she added.

After the opening, the guest of honour was led on a tour of the exhibition. Its main objective is to show the public that art plays an important role in our lives, while also being a form of appreciation and respect for our culture, life and even the environment that brings people on a journey of self-awareness and understanding, and hopefully strengthen Brunei's creative industry.

During the period of the exhibition (from April 13 until May 21), Coffee Bean (CB) vouchers and food coupons will be given away, while Spectacle T-shirts will also be sold to the public with some reserved for some lucky winners.
