Greedy puppy has to be rescued from biscuit jar after getting head stuck

A greedy puppy got his head stuck in his family’s biscuit jar – then had to be rescued by firefighters.

Pug and Chihuahua cross-breed Buddy was desperate to raid the glass container to gobble up crumbs but soon wore a sorrowful expression when his raid went wrong.

His owner tried to free him by putting fairy liquid all over the dog’s neck, hoping it might help slide Buddy’s head out gently.

But when that didn’t work he had to dial 999 and ask for the fire brigade.

Animal Rescue Tactical Adviser Anton Phillips, from Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service, was called to the home in Southampton to try and carefully rescue the chug puppy.

Mr Phillips, faced with Buddy’s doleful look, knew he could not risk the animals safety by breaking the glass and had to use manual manipulation to slowly free him.

Eventually he broke Buddy free by pulling back the dog’s loose skin – when there was a loud ‘pop’.

Mr Phillips said: ‘This was an unusual job and it was strange being able to see the animal’s doleful expression through the glass.

‘I was keen not to risk breaking the glass as this could have injured the animal.

‘I used manual manipulation to release the dog’s head. I pulled back the loose skin and positioned it so I could get one ear out then the other. There was a pop as I got its head free.

‘I have dealt with a lot of animals over the years and I always say if they can get it in I can get it out.’
