BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

Personnel from the Fire and Rescue Department managed to prevent a suicide attempt by a 23-year-old woman yesterday afternoon, at the Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha (RIPAS) Hospital.

Photos and videos of the incident showed the visibly distressed woman sitting on the window ledge on the first floor of the hospital's Lab Unit, in an apparent attempt to jump off the building.

A statement from the Ministry of Health (MoH) said that witnesses saw the woman talking to herself and screaming.

They informed the hospital's administration, who immediately contacted the police and Fire and Rescue Department.

MoH also said that a consultant psychiatrist and psychologist were present at the scene, together with a number of doctors, paramedics and nurses.

Meanwhile, the Fire and Rescue Department deployed several personnel and members of its special squad from the Bandar Seri Begawan Fire Station.

A video, which went viral, showed the woman struggling as uniformed personnel successfully carried her to safety through the window, while another pulled her into the building.

A statement from the Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF) said that a report on the incident was received at about 2.16pm yesterday, and that an investigation into the woman's motives is underway.

The woman is currently under medical observation and receiving treatment at the hospital's Mental Health Unit.

MoH has asked the public to respect her privacy, and refrain from distributing photos and videos of the incident.
