Education Ministry Feted 521 Students for Outstanding Achievements

Some 521 students nationwide who have attained outstanding results in public examinations last year were awarded in a ceremony hosted by the Ministry of Education (MoE) yesterday.
The annual award ceremony for outstanding students in Government and Private Schools Nationwide for 2015 was held at the Chancellor Hall in Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) yesterday, attended by the guest of honour, Deputy Minister of Education, Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Bahrom bin Pengiran Haji Bahar.
During the ceremony, which was also attended by parents and guardians of the award recipients, 25 students were awarded for excellent results in the Brunei-Cambridge General Certificate of Education (BC-GCE) 'A' Level, while 69 students were awarded for outstanding GCE, General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE), BC-GCE and International General Certificate of Education (IGCSE) 'O' Level results.
Four outstanding International Baccalaureate (IB) candidates were also awarded, along with 423 outstanding Primary School Assessment (PSR) students. All award recipients received plaques and certificates from the guest of honour in the ceremony.
Event Chairman Pengiran Ayup bin Pengiran Haji Othman, Acting Senior Special Duties Officer and Head of the Private Education Division at the MoE in his speech shared that the percentage of outstanding students awarded in the PSR category has increased by 16 per cent compared to the previous year.
He also mentioned that there is a 24 per cent increase in the number of PSR candidates from private schools awarded in the ceremony yesterday.
He also noted that in the face of globalisation, the roles of both government and private education institutions are no less important than each other.
He further said that the job market today also sees private education institutions as a centre for generating of academic and expert needs based on market needs.
One PSR award recipient, Christina Angellia anak Dollah from Pai Yuek School in the Temburong District, who is now pursuing her Sixth Form education at Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College said that support from the teachers and family has made her achieve outstanding results in the public examination last year.
"I was also very committed to revise while at home and focus on my learning at school. I am so happy that all the hard work paid off," she added.
BC-GCE 'O' Level/IGCSE outstanding award recipient, Andrea Lee Yin Sin from St Margaret's School in the Belait District who achieved eight grade As out of nine subjects, said she is deeply grateful for recognition and said it will motivate her to do better in her future educational pursuits.
Andrea is now pursuing her Engineering Foundation overseas and intends to take on Chemical or Mechanical Engineering.
To qualify for the award, students in the PSR category must achieve straight grade As in all the subjects they sat for in the examination.
For the BC-GCE and IGCSE 'O' Levels, award recipients must obtain eight credits or more with credits in the Malay and English subjects, two grade As in any subject and an aggregate below 12 in six of their best subjects.
Meanwhile to qualify for an award in the BC-GCE 'A' Level/ GCSE / IGCSE and IB, a student must obtain at least 40-45 points.
