Trilingualism plays a pivotal role at Chung Hwa Middle School (CHMS) Bandar Seri Begawan. The benefits derived from it are crucial towards the well-being and development of our students.
As a result, CHMS attempts to emphasise its importance by holding a Trilingual Month celebration annually. 2015's celebration was a great success and a day I remember vividly even now With that being said, I guarantee you 2016's Trilingual Month celebration will not be a disappointment.
The opening event was held at the Darussalam Hall of CHMS. The event was formally launched after the speeches by our principal, Kho Guik Lan and the chief guest Lim Peh Beng, Public Relations Officer at CHMS.
"As long as we are determined, mastering three languages is not difficult. With the help of the Board of Directors in providing an environment conducive for learning, I am convinced that we will be able to learn language like a breeze," said Kho Guik Lan.
The performances started with a Malay discourse on the importance of physical exercise. The talented student-speaker raised some very interesting points and truly convinced many of the audience.
The show then continued with a beautiful English play performed by the lower primary students, the story of the two forbidden lovers `Romeo and Juliet'. The performers displayed adept skill and understanding of their role despite being very young, and the audience was quite enthusiastic and supportive.
The excitement in the hall went on for hours. After the performances, the chief guest visited exhibitions and booths set up by each language department displayingthe work and accomplishments of students.
I believe the most important task of the event was to spread awareness of trilingualism, allowing others to understand the messages behind these performances, and feel the beauty of the three languages coexisting on one stage.
The very heart and soul of our school regardless of race and ethnicity was united as one on this day. I am honoured to have been able to witness an event that showcased such incredible levels of harmony and unity, if given the chance, I would definitely attend next year's Trilingual Month celebration as well.
Trilingualism is more than just the proficiency of three languages, it is an important part of the culture here in CHMS, and as students of the school, we shall do everything in our power to preserve it.
