A Tedarus ceremony was organised by the Ministry of Health (MoH) at the Kampong Sungai Teraban Mosque in the Belait District last Saturday, during which 28 orphans and underprivileged persons received donations in the form of food gifts.
On hand to present the donations was the Minister of Health, Yang Berhormat Dato Paduka Dr. Awang Haji Zulkarnain bin Haji Hanafi, who also led the Ministry of Health entourage during the Tedarus ceremony.
Ten of the recipients were patients under the care of the Suri Seri Begawan Hospital's Medical Welfare Unit.
A Medical Welfare Officer, who spoke to the media on condition of anonymity, said that those under the care of the unit are subject to extensive assessment in order to be listed as patients that require support.
"We interview them, and also refer to their documents provided by the doctors, and we make home visits to examine them further," she said.
Patients also receive medical equipment, which according to the officer, is often provided by sponsors.
"We look for sponsors from the community, private individuals or non-government organisations (NGOs)," she said. "If there are people or organisations who want to donate, we will provide them with a list, so that they can easily approach the patients in their homes, or they can donate to them through us."
Meanwhile, a senior officer from the Suri Seri Begawan Hospital, spoke about the contributions being received by the Medical Welfare Unit.
"We hope that these will encourage and comfort the recipients, especially during this holy month of Ramadhan," he said.
The Tedarus ceremony is an annual religious activity for the Ministry of Health, which is held alternately in all four districts during Ramadhan, to foster goodwill among staff members and officials.
Also present at yesterday's event was Awang Haji Zakaria bin Haji Serudin, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Health; Dr. Hazri bin Haji Kifle, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Policy) at the Ministry of Health; and Awang Haji Mohd Mersidi bin Haji Mohd Shara, Village Head of Kampong Sungai Teraban.
