Amid growing concern that Islamic State of Iraq and Syria propaganda is radicalising Singaporeans at a quicker pace, the Government is urging Singaporeans to quickly inform the authorities if they know if anyone has been radicalised.
Between 2007 and 2014, five Singaporeans were detained and six were placed on Restriction Orders. But from January 2015 to August this year, eight Singaporeans have been detained and five others placed on Restriction Orders, said the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
Stressing that every member of the public has a role to play in keeping Singapore safe from the threat of terrorism, the MHA noted that in the latest round of orders under the Internal Security Act (ISA), one of the radicalised Singaporeans, Mohamad Reiney Noor Mohd, was stopped from going down the path of terrorism in part due to “sound advice from a close relative”. “With timely intervention, that person could be saved,” said the MHA.
Reiney is one of four self-radicalised Singaporeans revealed to have been dealt with the ISA on Friday (Aug 19), for terrorism-related activities. He was issued a two-year Restriction Order. Of the other three, Rosli Hamzah and Mohamed Omar Mahadi were to be detained for two years, while Dian Faezah Ismail, who is Omar’s wife, was also issued a two-year Restriction Order.
Responding to queries, the MHA said Reiney is related to Dian and Omar through marriage. “Family involvement is not a new trend. It was previously seen in the case of the Jemaah Islamiyah as well. However, there is no evidence at this point that Omar’s children are radicalised,” the MHA said.
The MHA also said that there is also no indication that Rosli was acquainted with the other three. “Only Rosli is known to frequent Batam to visit his Indonesian wife and children. There is no information to suggest that Rosli is involved in the Batam plot to attack Singapore,” added the MHA.
Since 2002, 83 persons have been detained under the ISA for terrorism-related activities and 62 have been released.
