200 Attended MoF Roadshow in Belait

BELAIT

More than 200 members of the public and students from schools in the Belait District attended a roadshow organised by the Ministry of Finance (MoF) aimed at raising their understanding of the reforms the ministry has implemented to support the ease of doing business.

Talks are given during the roadshow from officials representing the Treasury Department, Royal Customs and Excise Department, Employees Trust Fund, Revenue Division, Registry of Companies and Business Names Division, Ease of Doing Business Unit at the Prime Minister's Office, Ministry of Home Affairs, Ports Department, Postal Services Department and DARE (Darussalam Enterprise).

The topics included facilitating trade across borders, the provision of laws on the protection of minority investors, changes to the payment of taxes, the process of resolving company insolvency and the process of starting a business.

Three 15-year-old students of Year 9G1 in Sayyidina Ali Secondary School (SMSA) - Emelda Alisha binti Patao, Pepilini Selos Harry and Leong Mei Ling - spoke to the Bulletin after attending the afternoon talk sessions.

Dreaming of opening their own bakery after they finish their studies, they said the roadshow helped them take a step closer to their entrepreneurial goals.

"We received updated information and examples of the type of businesses that are available around Brunei. We learned that there are materials offered by the government to perform well throughout the business lifespan," said Leong Mei Ling, who added that it's also convenient that the information has been made available online.

One of the topics which interest them most was online business.

"It is because nowadays, people are using social media, so advertisements on that platform reach users better," said Pepilini Selos Harry.

During the presentations, DARE also announced that a Business Support Centre will be established by October 2016 for Kuala Belait.

In a press release, the MoF said the public - especially business owners - are welcome to visit the roadshow which will be held at the Tutong Civic Centre on September 14 and the Pekan Bangar Community Hall on September 21.
