The Department of Livestock and Fisheries (DLF) of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF-Laos) signed a Memorandum of Understanding on fisheries community co-management in the middle Mekong.

The MOU was signed by Deputy Director General of the Department of Livestock and Fisheries Bounthong Saphakdy, and the Country Director of WWF-Laos, Somphon Buasavanh.

The project commenced in July of this year and will conclude in September of 2019.  The project will take place in at least 15 villages situated along the Mekong River in Bolikhamxay and Khammuan, according to Conservation Programme Manager Francois Guegan.

The 3-year US$402,000 project is being funded by WWF Switzerland and will receive technical support from the WWF Greater Mekong Programme Office.

The project is designed to improve trans-boundary freshwater natural resource management via the creation of fish conservation zones, fishery management committees and village patrolling units to support local livelihoods and develop alternative sources of income to reduce pressure on freshwater natural resources and raise awareness among communities to better understand the benefits of fish conservation and fishery management.
