Youth in Abortion Case Set for Time in Jail, fine

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

The Intermediate Court deferred sentencing a 22-year-old local woman following her guilty pleas on Monday to aborting her pregnancy and after she agreed to the statement of facts in court yesterday.

Nuramallinie @ Amal binti Suhailie caused the miscarriage by consuming pills to induce the miscarriage at a house in Perumahan Kampong Sungai Bunga on August 31, 2016. Judge Pengiran Hajah Hanani binti Pengiran Haji Metussain will be handing her sentence Saturday.

DPP Rozaimah binti Abdul Rahman's said the defendant was six months pregnant when she decided to terminate her pregnancy, stemming from the fear of incurring the wrath of her parents who were not aware that she had conceived out of wedlock.

The defendant had taken similar pills when she aborted an earlier pregnancy in 2015. On September 1, the defendant went to work at a booth in Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Shopping Complex and felt immense pain throughout the day, causing her to frequent the toilet.

A close friend who knew what the defendant was going through had come to the booth to visit the defendant.

In the evening, the defendant felt excruciating pain and asked a nearby booth attendant to walk her to the toilet.

The defendant sat on the floor in one of the cubicles, gave birth to a baby boy and bit into the umbilical cord to detach the baby from her placenta.

She placed the baby on the toilet bowl lid while her friend went to check up on her. This was when the defendant showed the baby to her friend, who then left and came back bringing the defendant's bag with clothes.

The baby was wrapped in a cardigan and shirt and brought by the friend out of the toilet, as shown on CCTV camera footage.

The defendant changed her clothes and cleaned the cubicle up removing traces of blood.

The defendant closed up the booth and contacted her ex-fiance telling him that she had just given birth to a baby and asked for assistance to go to the hospital.

Later the same evening at the hospital, the doctor informed the defendant that her baby was dead. Police received a report and conducted investigations, whilst the defendant was admitted for medical attention.

The post-mortem report on the dead baby states that it was a product of abortion.

Nuramallinie faces a maximum of seven years in jail and a fine.
