School, College Officials Urge to be Up With Date Zika Developments

The Zika virus has spread to several countries including those in Southeast Asia based on the information from the World Health Organization (WHO).
This was highlighted by Pengiran Nazrul Arif bin Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Md Zain, Head of Health, Safety, Security and the Environment (HSSE), Department of Administration and Services, Ministry of Education, during a briefing covering the prevention of the spread of the Zika virus held yesterday at the Raja Isteri Girls High School (STRPI).
Pengiran Nazrul Arif explained HSSE Section, has taken on the responsibility of disseminating relevant information on preventive steps to ensure cleanliness in schools and colleges to avoid students being exposed to the Zika virus.
He emphasised that no cases of the virus have been reported in Brunei Darussalam, but it remains a mutual and collaborative responsibility for everyone to be vigilant and take preventive steps as well as enhance their own understanding on the causes of the spread of the Zika virus.
The briefing touched on three factors, the spread of the Zika virus, containment ofthe breeding of mosquitoes through vector control services and cleanliness in schools and colleges.
Pengiran Nazrul Arif urged heads and principals of schools and colleges to follow current developments through the media, website of the Ministry of Health or Darussalam line 123.
The Zika virus can infect any individual bitten by a mosquito that has been infected.
The types of mosquitoes include Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus.
Infected individuals may have symptoms such as muscle aches or pains, joint pains, headaches, conjunctivitis, rashes and tiredness which can last for a week.
The briefings were delivered by Dr Muhammad Hussien on the spread of the Zika virus, Julaini Haji Bini on vector control services and Hanisah binti Haji Matsah on cleanliness in schools and colleges.
Another briefing will be held for heads and principals of schools under Cluster 5 and 6 in the Tutong and Belait districts on October 8 at the Tutong Sixth Form Centre.
