An influencer has been slammed online for dyeing her dog to match her outfit - but she insists the comments are 'absurd' as she 'just wanted to make it fashionable'

A woman has been slammed online and called a "monster" for dyeing her dog to match her outfit.

Some people love dressing their dogs up and some people loathe it. Recently the trend has become more popular after dog owners shared pooch styling trends on social media. But, content creator Sabrina Low, from Brazil, found that people were less than impressed after she dyed her dog's fur.

Sabrina says she decided to match her dog to her 'look' after seeing something similar online. "People sent a lot of private messages saying that I was attacking the dog," she said.

Sabrina Low, who has 90,600 followers on Instagram (@eusabrinalow) has hit the headlines in the past for pulling pranks on her now ex-boyfriend MC Leléto and sharing DIY fashion hacks. In a recent photo shared online, the 22-year-old can be seen wearing a pink jacket with a pink handbag. Her dog is sat on her lap with pink fur to match.

She explained: "But he is like my son. I would never do that. People said I'm a monster, a criminal – absurd things. I just wanted to make it fashionable. I love this animal, he is my partner and everything I do includes him too.

"I chose to paint him with crepe paper, as I thought this would be a less aggressive dye for my dog."

But after the online backlash, Sabrina claims she won't do it again. She added: "I just wanted to have some fun. He eats well, bathes and is groomed regularly. People judge without understanding." At the time of writing, the influencer has not removed her social media post but comments have been disabled.

Much like how some humans can react very badly to hair dye, so can pets, and strong chemicals can inflict damage on a dog's skin that may lead to infections. Pet hair dye companies recommend patch testing before use - and human dye products should never be used under any circumstances.

Dr Anna Foreman from Everypaw Pet Insurance said that dyeing dogs' fur could put them at risk of toxicity, skin irritation and serious skin complaints, the Mirror previously reported. She also pointed out that this is almost always done for the benefit of the owners and not the pets themselves, and told CornwallLive: "There is no situation where dyeing a pet's fur is benefiting the animal themselves. It is purely benefiting us for aesthetic purposes. Some dogs enjoy being groomed or being bathed, however there is no way we can say that animals specifically enjoy being dyed."
