The district police here detained a 45-year-old man with 8,020 boxes of cigarettes on his Nissan Safari passenger seat during a road block at KM19 Jalan Kunak-Lahad Datu, yesterday.

District police chief Supt Mohd Nasaruddin M Nasir in a statement yesterday said the suspect, with a permanent resident (PR) status, was heading to Lahad Datu from Tawau when passing through the roadblock at 3.00am.

“Upon inspecting the vehicle the police found the cigarettes on the passenger seat and the seized items were estimated to be worth about RM30,000.

“Police also seized RM5,000 in cash and three  mobile phones inside the suspect’s bag,” he said, adding that the suspect was currently under their custody for further investigation.

Mohd Nasaruddin added that the roadblock began at 12.30am  and was led by Inspector Mohd Siddiq Che Omar and his members from the Kunak Traffic Division.
