Police raided a storeroom that was stocking up firecrackers and fireworks for the coming Chinese New Year celebration at Kampung Kepayan here last Friday.

City police chief ACP M. Chandra said the firecrackers and fireworks of various brands and valued at RM15,000, were confiscated by police.

“A 35-year-old man was detained during the operation and we will remand him to assist investigation under Section 8 of the Explosive Act 1957 and Section 135 (1) (b) of the Customs Act 1967,” he said yesterday.

Chandra said the illegal items were believed imported from a neighbouring country and to be sold in local market.

Only ‘Pop-Pop’ and ‘Happy Boom’ which are considered not dangerous are allowed to be sold to the public.

“However, if those who want to play fireworks and firecrackers during the Chinese New Year or carnivals, then they have to apply for a permit from the police.

Meanwhile, Chandra  reminded the public not to be involved in any illegal or gambling syndycate during the festive celebration.

“We have launched Ops Limau from Jan 15 until end of February, to monitor premises organizing illegal gambling activity.

“If anyone is caught organizing or participating in such activity, stern action will be taken,” he said.
