LAOS, VIENTIANE

Laos and the Philippines have agreed to seek more channels to promote bilateral trade, investment and education in order to enhance the cooperation between the two nations.

The commitment was reached during a bilateral meeting between Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Laos, Mr Thongloun Sisoulith and Secretary of Foreign Affairs of the Philippines Jose Rene D. Almendras in Vientiane yesterday.

The bilateral meeting was held on the occasion of a working visit by Mr Almendras and his delegation to the Lao PDR from 18-20 April 2016.

The two delegates discussed promoting cooperation and investment in the fields of small and medium enterprises, repeated tax exemptions, services and airlines.

During the meeting, both sides also highly valued the achievements of the bilateral relations and good cooperation between Laos and Philippines in the past.

Laos and the Philippines have exchanged visits among high-ranking officials at all levels and also helped each other on regional and international stages.

Both sides also informed each other about outstanding current developments in their nations, especially in politics and socio-economic development.

They also discussed achievements of the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Retreat Meeting in Vientiane in February of 2016 and the U.S.-ASEAN Special Leaders’ Summit in California in February of this year.

On the occasion of the Lao PDR’s ASEAN Chairmanship for 2016, both sides noted that it is necessary to enhance cooperation and coordination in order to reach the targets of the ASEAN Three Pillars.

The most important issue was bringing the ASEAN Economic Community to fruition step by step.
