Halal Certificate and Label Order Amendment 2017

To further update the Halal certificate and label Order in line with the current conditions and requirements, measures have been taken for a number of amendments to be made. According to the Minister of Religious Affairs, the Halal Certificate and Label Order Amendment 2017 is in the process of being gazetted and will be enforced a few months after the gazetted date.

 

The Minister of Religious Affairs in presenting the Ministry's budget proposal also explained that the halal certificate and label Order Amendment 2017 also authorised the minister by the consent of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam to exempt certain individuals or group or business from the obligation of applying for halal certification depending on conditions that will be stipulated.

 

Yang Berhormat explained that a number of matters have been allocated through the latest amendments among them, making it compulsory for the application of a halal certificate or permit on businesses linked to food preparation in Brunei Darussalam. Currently the Act is a voluntary one. Second is to broaden the halal certification scope which is voluntary at the this level to products other than food including cosmetics, consumables and services such as logistics related to transportation, storage, packaging and others. Third is to broaden the applications for obtaining certification to include businesses outside Brunei Darussalam. Fourth, overseas enforcement is dependent on a permit holder being a citizen of Brunei Darussalam, permanent resident or corporate body registered under the written law of Brunei Darussalam. Fifth, allocating authority to impose compound fines on offences under the halal certification and label Order 2005. A 6 month grace period will be provided to any businesses to obtain the halal certification.

 

In the field of Syariah Law, the Minister of Religious Affairs said that his Ministry is committed to carrying out the Syariah Penal Code in line with the country's aspirations and commitment to implement it according to its phases of implementation.
