Towards providing sufficient and continuous supply of clean water, the Ministry of Development is focusing on ensuring efficient production and management of water resources in order to lessen the rate of Non-revenue Water or lost water from the current 45 percent to a more reasonable level.

According to the Minister of Development, the remedial efforts and initiatives of the Water Service Department include replacing old pipes and reviewing water tariffs as an incentive for consumers to save water and to further enhance activities in educating the community on the importance of water and avoid wastage.

The major projects to ensure clean and sufficient water supply include the Ulu Tutong Dam which is designed to operate with capabilities to control and channel water to Tutong River when there is not enough supply to fulfil the needs of raw water.  The Minister also disclosed the project is 95 percent complete and is expected to be completed in the middle of this year.  The dam is already storing water and has a capacity of more than one hundred million cubic metres.  When completed the Tutong Dam will boost the water supply for Brunei-Muara and Tutong Districts as well as reduce the risk of water shortage, especially during a drought.
