Towards ensuring that the safety and well-being of citizens and residents in Brunei Darussalam are always secured, the Ministry of Health has been mandated to enforce several laws and regulations, among them the Tobacco Order 2005. Touching on the matter, the Minister of Health shared some statistics related to the enforcement of the Tobacco Order.

 

Throughout January and February of this year alone, the Enforcement Unit, Ministry of Health has recorded 108 cases of violation to the Tobacco Order 2005, and issued 77 compounds and 31 mandatory referrals to Smoking Cessation Clinics to individuals and companies for failing to abide by the Order. 75 cases were recorded under Section 14(2) which is an offence for smoking and vaping at no-smoking and vaping places; 32 cases under Section 10(1) for individuals under 18 years old; and 1 case under Section 16(4) which is an offence involving premise or building managers and owners for failing to control smoking and vaping activities at places where smoking and vaping are prohibited by law. In 2017, a total of 532 violation cases were recorded, where 438 involved the issuance of compounds by the Enforcement Unit, Ministry of Health, while 94 others below 18 years old were ordered to register themselves at Smoking Cessation Clinics.
