DPMM FC head coach Steve Kean has accepted that his side may need at least 11 victories in their final 13 matches if they were to stand a chance of retaining their S League title ahead of the Hougang United FC encounter at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium tonight.
The head coach emphasised that with games running out his charges may need to build an unbeaten run between now until the end of the season with league leaders Albirex Niigata (S) in merciless form.
The 'Gegar Gegar' men were dealt with a severe blow following the Warriors draw at the Choa Chu Kang Stadium on May 5, but Kean has every belief that a win against Hougang, who currently lie third, can help resuscitate their title defence.
Kean also agreed that his team is only a victory away from creating a good run of results and only takes an opponent to see his charges finally lay their goal-scoring concerns to bed.
"Somebody is going to meet us on a day that we're all going to click and hopefully it's this weekend," said Kean in an interview with the Weekend Bulletin at the Jerudong Mini Stadium yesterday.
He added that his team cannot stay relaxed with 13 games to go before they complete the season.
"With only 13 remaining, if we want to retain the championship and go close to retaining the title, we need to win 11 of them."
Kean has indicated that they have a huge gap to chase with his team nowhere close to the title contenders.
They're running out so we can't just think that it's okay that we've got the third round because we're so far off the top.
"We need to start chopping up the wins starting this weekend," Kean said.
The Scotsman hoped that his charges could replicate their routines in training sessions adding that it is "pointless to be good every week" but left short-changed come match-day.
The team's forwards are desperate to put things right in front of goal after performing finishing drills in the last week more than they have done in the last three months, according to Kean.
With results not going their way, the head coach has been shifting his focus to get goals his team have been lacking and keeping a clean sheet.
Kean also hailed the support of fans having hacked his team and probably venting frustration as much as the players following a string of bad results.
"The fans have always been great. They've stayed with us because probably they're just as frustrated as us seeing us playing well and yet we're way off the pace in the championship race," he concluded.
