Youths in the country are urged to be proud of the Malay Language and to use it as best as possible. If they are less skilled in the Malay Language, they are urged to learn from knowledgeable teachers. If they are unsure of a word or saying in Malay, ask those in the know; and if they are not fluent in the language, practise communicating in Malay with others. These were among the matters voiced by Yang Berhormat Awang Iswandy bin Ahmad, member of the Legislative Council during the Malay Language Oratory Competition held yesterday afternoon at the Indoor Stadium, Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas.
Yang Berhormat said nowadays, especially as the world enters the 4th Industrial Revolution, progress and development will certainly take place rapidly and quickly. However, there are also those who are worried that with the wave of modernisation, important values, including the use of the Malay Language will slowly disappear. Yang Berhormat said this is where we, as a country, need to move together in upholding the Malay Language.
13 youths took part in the competition, which was an initiative and responsibility of the Language Ambassador in instilling interest among the younger generation to perpetuate the use of Malay Language in daily life. The competition aimed to enliven this year's Language Month celebration and the Youth Day Festival which is held until this Sunday. Also present was Awang Haji Abdul Rashid bin Awang Haji Damit, the Brunei Darussalam Language Ambassador.
