Improving the quality of life for people with different abilities in the country is stressed upon in the publication of the book entitled 'Different Abilities Design Guidelines', published by the Ministry of Development. The progressive improvement is vital in ensuring an inclusive culture for people with different abilities. Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suhaimi bin Haji Gafar, Minister of Development said that the guideline book shows the country's effort in realising the country's place in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. During the launch of the guideline book, the Minister of Development also shared that buildings which are designed provides access to senior citizens as well as persons with disabilities.

 

Yang Berhormat said that facilities for wheelchair users, such as ramps, need to be provided according to the set gradient. Meanwhile, the use of Braille and Tactile Information on sign boards at strategic places such as stairs, elevator buttons, and public toilets also need to be provided to assist persons with sight disabilities to become independent in a particular building.

 

The "Different Abilities Design Guidelines" book was published with the aim of improving safety, comfort and reduce barriers in the surrounding, to ensure that people with different abilities can utilise the facilities provided in a particular building with ease and without requiring assistance from other people.

 

The ceremony ran concurrently with the presentation of the guideline book and certificates of appreciation to committee members involved in preparing the book. Also present were Awang Haji Marzuke bin Haji Mohsin, Deputy Minister of Development; Yang Berhormat Dayang Siti Rozaimeriyanty Binti Dato Seri Laila Jasa Awang Haji Abdul Rahman, member of the Legislative Council and Pengiran Shaharuddin bin Pengiran Haji Yussof, Acting Head of the Authority for Building Control and Construction Industry, ABCi, as the ceremony's chairperson.
