Disaster Risk Management Programme

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

In regards to the disaster risk management programme at the community level that was raised by Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Pendikar Alam Dato Paduka Seri Awang Haji Hasrin bin Dato Paduka Awang Haji Sabtu; Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia Dr. Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong, the Minister of Home Affairs explained that the Community Based Disaster Risk Management Programme (CBDRM) is utilising two methods.

The first method is to maintain the CBDRM basic training programme that takes place at the CAE Brunei Multi-Purpose Training Centre (MPTC) taking advantage of the expertise and facilities that can be found at the centre. The second method is the programme's implementation at all levels of the community. With the two methods, the National Disaster Management Centre, NDMC is expecting participation from 20 mukims nationwide by the end of this year.

In response to the query, the Minister of Home Affairs said the CBDRM programme has been extended to the education sector through the School Based Disaster Risk Management training, SBDRM programme at CAE Brunei MPTC. As of January this year, 240 students and teachers from 63 government and private education institutions in all districts took part in the SBDRM training. This year, the NDMC will work together with the education sector to extend the programme to several schools and higher education institutions in August and October.

The CBDRM programme will also become a permanent module in the National Service Programme. Regarding the involvement of Mukim and Kampung Consultative Councils, 143 Mukim and Kampung Consultative Council members from 34 villages in all district have been given training, and will undergo the intermediate CBDRM programme that will have practical Training of Trainers for the society's preparedness in facing disaster. The programme was also successfully extended to 11 non-government agencies and association bodies including the Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, Students Association, Community Welfare Council and the Youth Transformation Community Club. NDMC will continue its efforts to further expand the programme participation scope with the cooperation of stakeholders from time to time.
