A photograph of Loch Ness has got people excited that it could show the elusive Nessie.

It shows the back of an animal in the water, with the image too far away to tell if it is scaly or otherwise.

If it is a fish, it must be a very large one.

The photographer himself is sceptical that it offers proof a Loch Ness monster lurks in the depths, but that hasn’t stopped others wondering.

 Steve Challice, of Southampton, took the picture last September and recently posted it on Facebook.

He asked for help identifying the animal, saying: ‘I started taking a couple of shots and then this big fish came to the surface and then went back down again.’

According to the Inverness Courier, he thought it was a catfish at first and estimated that it was 30ft away and about 8ft long.

But others responding said they had IDed it as Nessie swimming near to Urquhart Castle.

Mr Challice said: ‘It only appeared in one shot and to be honest that was something of a fluke. I watched for a while as you can see from the last picture but didn’t see it again.’

He said it had taken him a while to post it as he had found the time to go through his pictures because of the lockdown.

‘I have to say I don’t believe in the Loch Ness Monster and frankly I think if anything is there then there is a logical explanation for most of the sightings,’ he added.
