BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

Istana Darussalam located in the capital is the only old building that is still maintained. It has a big potential to attract more tourists, especially those who are interested in studying history. The issue to include Istana Darussalam's information into tourist guidebooks was raised by Yang Berhormat Pengiran Haji Ali bin Pengiran Maon.

In explaining the matter, the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports said Istana Darussalam has an important and highly-valued history for the country. Istana Darussalam was gazetted as one of the protected monuments under the Antiquities and Treasure Trove Act 1967 revision 1984, 1991 and 2002. The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports through the Museums Department continues to disseminate information on historical sites through the Bandar Seri Begawan Heritage Trail. Towards this, tourist-friendly sign boards have been installed at monuments and historical sites. The Ministry through the Brunei History Centre has also documented materials pertaining 'Istana' that can be found in the country, including the information on Istana Darussalam, and make it as a guiding material especially for tour guides, with the cooperation of the Tourism Development Department, Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism. Information on Istana Darussalam has been included in pamphlets for tourists, and there are 15 tourism agencies that have Istana Darussalam as a photo stop in the Bandar Seri Begawan City tour package.
