BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

Brunei Darussalam celebrates Hari Raya Aidilfitri with the takbir resounding from all mosques, suraus and religious halls throughout the country, praising the greatness of Allah the Almighty. The celebration began with the Sunat Aidilfitri prayer. His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam yesterday morning joined His Majesty's subjects and other residents in performing the Sunat Aidilfitri prayer at the Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Mosque in the Capital.

Upon arrival, His Majesty was greeted by Yang Berhormat Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Awang Othman, the Minister of Religious Affairs, as the Chairman of Major Islamic events executive committee for 1439 Hijrah; Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Paduka Haji Awang Abdul Mokti bin Haji Mohd Daud, the Minister at the Prime Minister's Office; Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri Setia Doctor Ustaz Haji Awang Abdul Aziz bin Juned, the State Mufti; Pengiran Dato Seri Paduka Haji Bahrom bin Pengiran Haji Bahar, the Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs and other committee members.

Also in attendance were His Majesty's sons; His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister's Office; His Royal Highness Prince 'Abdul Malik; and His Royal Highness Prince 'Abdul Mateen.

The Sunat Aidilfitri prayer was led by Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Paduka Seri Utama Dato Paduka Seri Setia Haji Awang Salim bin Haji Besar.

Meanwhile, the khutbah or sermon was read by the State Mufti and among other things reminded Muslims not to be carried away in the midst of celebrating Hari Raya. Hari Raya is not a 'ticket' for us to neglect our obligations unto Allah such as leaving the prayers, staying away from reciting the istighfar, zikir and remembrance of Allah Subahanahu Wataala. The State Mufti added that Hari Raya is a day to glorify Allah Subahanahu Wataala and increase in gaining rewards, and not running away from them.

Meanwhile in the second sermon, the State Mufti touched on increasing the zikir or remembrance of Allah Subahanahu Wataala. The State Mufti added in the era of the First Caliph Uthman bin Afan Radiallahu, the Muslim ummah were powerful and owned many islands.  However their wealth were taken away by the enemy because of their negligence and failure to remember Allah the Almighty at all times.  What happened to the Muslims of that era was a valuable lesson to reflect upon.
