In the first quarter 2024, retail sales recorded an increase of 3 per cent compared to 2023, with sales revenue increasing from 434.7 million to 447.6 million.
The Department of Economic Planning and Statistics, Ministry of Finance and Economy in its media release stated that in terms of volume, retail sales activity also recorded a positive growth of 5.9 per cent, indicating a rise in domestic demand.
The increase in sales revenue of retail sales was mainly attributed to the increase in sales of Furniture and Household Equipment, followed by sales of Electrical Household Appliances and Lighting Equipment in specialized stores; sales of Hardware, Paints and Glass in specialized stores; sales at Petrol Station; and sales at Department Store.
Compared to the fourth quarter of 2023, the retail sales value and volume in the first quarter 2024 also increased. The retail sales value increased by 0.8 per cent, driven mainly by increases in the sales of Textiles, Wearing Apparel and Footwear, followed by sales of Electrical Household Appliances and Lighting Equipment in specialized stores; sales at Department Store; sales at Petrol Station; and sales at Supermarket.
For sales of food and beverage services, a decrease of 2.2 per cent was recorded compared to the first quarter 2023, with sales revenue decreasing from 110.1 million to 107.7 million. In terms of volume, food and beverages activity also recorded a negative growth of 2.8 per cent indicating a decrease in domestic demand. The decrease in sales revenue of food and beverage was attributed to the decline in sales revenue of Restaurants and Fast-Food Outlets. Compared to the fourth quarter 2023, the sales value and volume of food and beverage services in the first quarter 2024 have decreased. The sales value of food and beverage services decreased due to decreases in sales revenue of Catering Service Activities; Restaurants; Fast-Food Outlets; and Other Food Service Activities.
