The growing youth population in Brunei Darussalam needs alternative forms of employment with agriculture being one viable opportunity. However, globally, farming is not attractive to young people, as it is too physically challenging. The matter was stated by Executive Director of the Centre for Strategic and Policy Studies, CSPS during the launch of the Pioneer Project, conducted by the Study Centre. It was launched on 28th June morning, at the CSPS Building in Gadong.

Dr. Diana Cheong in her speech also said that the study aims to address these issues and suggest ways to encourage youth involvement in rice cultivation. The pilot project aims to identify the effectiveness and improve the quality of the rice value chain in this country. In addition, the project also analyses policy impacts, develops collaborative strategies and implements a rice value chain project with youth and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, MSMEs to enhance food security and rice self-sufficiency. The project focuses on broader goals, such as the method of diversifying the economy involving multi-agency stakeholders.
