'Operasi Panyap'

12 foreigners were detained and brought to the Law Enforcement Division for further investigation during 'Operasi Panyap' on a room rented by foreign workers in Mukim Liang, Kuala Belait.

 

Three of them are believed to have overstayed in the country after their immigration passes had expired. Nine of them were detained after failing to produce any valid documents and were believed NOT to be working with their original employers.

 

The Department of Immigration and National Registration also shared a prosecution under the Immigration Act, Chapter 17. Nowaphon Ponthai, a Thai citizen, was brought to court on two charges. The first offence under the Women and Girls Protection Act, Chapter 120, carried a sentence of 8 months imprisonment. Meanwhile, the second offence, overstaying in the country after the immigration pass had expired, carried a sentence of 6 months imprisonment and a fine of $BND 1,000. The individual failed to pay the fine and was given an additional one month imprisonment, resulting in 7 months imprisonment in total. The total sentence of 15 months imprisonment took effect on 27th of September.
