Strengthening the National Food Security Agenda

Brunei Darussalam has made history in space science and technology when Universiti Brunei Darussalam, UBD, officially announced a high-impact mission led by the Biodiversity and Environment Research Institute in strategic collaboration with 'Space Faculty Private Limited Singapore'. The mission is not just a scientific experiment, but rather a manifestation of the country's seriousness in exploring new frontiers to ensure the sustainability of the agricultural sector. Through the use of space technology, the research is expected to have a major impact on the development of more advanced crop varieties, thus placing the country on the map of the global space ecosystem and agrotechnology, in line with the goal of strengthening the national food security agenda. This was emphasized in the Rampai Pagi interview titled: "Brunei Darussalam's First Seed Mission to Space".

These local rice seeds will be flown TOMORROW to the International Space Station using 'SpaceX's' Falcon 9 rocket from 'Cape Canaveral' in the United States. During the six months in orbit, the seeds will be exposed to cosmic radiation and extreme microgravity before being brought back to the country by the end of the year or early 2027 for their quality to be assessed by UBD researchers.
