The Muslim ummah is facing a dangerous change under the influence of liberalism that is happening not only in Malay world, but also throughout the archipelago. Liberalism has become an Islamic modernism that emerged in the 19th century. Speaking at the launching of the 14th International Conference on Islam in Malay World, the State Mufti highlighted that liberal Muslims are now hiding behind a variety of excuses to review religion, Al-Qur'an and Al-Hadith, as well as re-evaluating fiqh. Hence, Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Datu Paduka Seri Setia Doctor Ustaz Haji Awang Abdul Aziz bin Juned stressed that all parties must together face and prevent said group from successfully corrupting the Muslim ummah. The launching ceremony was held at Balai Khazanah Islam Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, 7th October morning.
The State Mufti stressed that the dangers of Liberal Islam should be taken seriously as it threatens the faith and can be bring about heresy. Therefore, it is the obligation of all to be cautious and take firm steps in preventing it from spreading and corrupting society.
A premier working paper presentation titled 'Sumbangan Data Kodilogi Dan Filologi Dalam Kajian Ahli-Sunnah Wal-Jamaáh Di Alam Melayu' was delivered by Dato' Ayman Al-Aktiti, Assistant Professor at the International Islamic University Malaysia. The conference is organised by Sultan Sharif Ali Islamic University through the Faculty of Usuluddin, in partnership with the Academic of Islamic Studies, Universiti Malaya, Malaysia; Graduate School of UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung, Indonesia; and College Of Islamic Studies, Prince of Songkla University, Thailand.
