35 years of diplomatic ties celebrated

The Embassy of the Russian Federation in Brunei Darussalam hosted a reception Tuesday evening to mark the 35th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Russia and Brunei Darussalam.

The event was attended by members of the diplomatic corps, representatives of government agencies, the media, civil society and friends of the embassy.

Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Pengiran Norhashimah binti Pengiran Mohd Hassan was the Guest of Honour.

In his remarks, Russian Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam Mikhail Baranov highlighted the longstanding friendship and growing bilateral cooperation between the two countries, founded on mutual respect and constructive dialogue.

He also highlighted recent high-level exchanges and expanding economic ties. Baranov said bilateral trade had grown considerably and was approaching USD900 million, while noting potential for further diversification, business links and joint projects.

Education, culture and humanitarian cooperation were also highlighted, including the opening of a Russian Corner at Universiti Teknologi Brunei and opportunities for Bruneian students to study at Russian universities.

Baranov said the 35th anniversary provided an opportunity to reflect on the countries’ longstanding ties while looking towards closer cooperation and stronger people-to-people links.
