Brunei Darussalam remains committed to upholding the core principles of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, UNESCO, namely promoting peace, fostering scientific collaboration for sustainable development, and cultivating inclusive societies through quality education and cultural preservation. This was stated by the Minister of Education at the 43rd Session of the UNESCO General Conference in Samarkand, Republic of Uzbekistan, starting from the 30th of October to 13th of November 2025. Yang Berhormat Datin Seri Setia Doctor Dayang Hajah Romaizah binti Haji Mohd. Salleh as Chairperson of the National Commission of Brunei Darussalam for UNESCO also reaffirmed Brunei Darussalam's steadfast commitment to advancing Sustainable Development Goal, SDG 4, with particular emphasis on STEAM education and future-ready competencies.
The Minister of Education stated that the launch of the Greening Education Plan at the 53rd SEAMEO Council Conference hosted by Brunei Darussalam in July 2025, demonstrated the nation's regional leadership in shaping the global education agenda beyond 2030. Among the key highlights of the General Conference was the General Policy Debate, during which Heads of Delegation from each Member State delivered national statements reaffirming their commitment to the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The High-Level Ministerial Segment on Education was also held as a side event in conjunction with the General Conference. The biennial conference serves as UNESCO's highest decision-making body, responsible for formulating the Organisation's policies, reviewing its activities and budget, and electing Members to the Executive Board. Also joining was Doctor Dayang Shamsiah Zuraini Kanchanawati binti Haji Tajuddin, Permanent Secretary for Core Education as the Secretary-General of the National Commission of Brunei Darussalam for UNESCO.
