65 bowlers vie for places in national squad

A total of 65 bowlers competed for places in the national squad for the 2026–2028 term during a selection programme organised by the Negara Brunei Darussalam Tenpin Bowling Congress (NBDTBC) at GoStrike Bowling Centre in Seria on October 10 and 11.

The selection aims to identify bowlers with the technical ability, competitive potential, discipline and commitment to progress through the national squad development programme.

Participants competed in three divisions: Youth for bowlers aged 21 and below, Open for those aged 22 to 49, and Senior for those aged 50 and above.

Each bowler completed 12 games over two days, with different oil patterns used each day to assess adaptability, consistency and technical performance under varying lane conditions.

Selection averages will be calculated based on the combined scores across all 12 games, with a minimum average of 170 required for consideration. Meeting the minimum requirement does not guarantee a place in the national squad.

Successful Open Division candidates will be classified into four performance categories: National Player–Development (170–189), National Player–Reserve (190–199), National Player–Elite (200–224) and National Player–Super Elite (225 and above).

The selection followed a briefing and engagement programme held at the National Stadium lecture hall on October 6, where prospective athletes were introduced to the programme’s objectives, expectations and long-term development plans.

NBDTBC president Dr Sannay bin Haji Mohamad said the selection marked the beginning of a more structured approach to developing national athletes.

“Our objective is not merely to select the best bowlers based on their performance over these two days, but to identify athletes with the potential, discipline and commitment to develop into competitive national representatives,” he said.

He said the congress aimed to establish a sustainable programme through systematic training, continuous performance assessments and exposure to increasingly competitive environments.

One of the programme’s key objectives is to develop a pool of athletes and shortlist four male and four female bowlers ahead of the 2027 Southeast Asian Games, subject to the applicable qualification, selection and participation requirements.

Dr Sannay said international competitiveness required more than individual talent, highlighting the importance of discipline, consistency, teamwork and long-term commitment.

He added that selection was not the final achievement but the beginning of a journey requiring dedication, continuous improvement and responsibility towards the nation.

The programme will also focus on technical development, physical conditioning, mental preparation and competitive exposure at local, regional and international levels.

NBDTBC said it remained committed to strengthening the standard of tenpin bowling in Brunei Darussalam and establishing a clear development pathway for future generations through cooperation among athletes, coaches, affiliated associations, bowling centres and relevant stakeholders.
