Seventy participants, comprising surf casters from across the nation, joined in the fifth edition of the surf cast fishing competition along the surrounding coastline of the Silver Jubilee Recreational Park in Kuala Belait, Belait District on Sunday.
Among the winners were Rosman Haji Daud, who emerged as the overall champion after landing a 9.36-kilogramme (kg) stingray, earning him a cash prize of BND700.
Meanwhile, second place went to Aruani Haji Ghani, who caught a 6.215kg stingray and received BND300 in prize money. He also won the Most Catches Category after successfully landing two fish.
Third place was secured by Ramlee Haji Md Said, who caught a stingray with a total weight of 5.75kg and received a cash prize of BND150.
Meanwhile, Aaron won the Fastest Catch Category after making his catch at 10.20am.
Senior Fisheries Officer and Head of the Licensing and Enforcement Division at the Department of Fisheries, Irwan bin Haji Mohd Noor, the guest of honour, presented the prizes.
Kampong Pandan ‘B’ Village Head Muhammad Rawiyani bin Morney, chairing the event, said, “The turnout for this year’s competition reflected the community’s continued support for the event. We hope that the fishing competition would continue to receive strong participation and become one of the annual activities anticipated by the local community.”
Organised by the Village Consultative Council (MPK) of Kampong Pandan ‘B’, the competition was held in conjunction with the 80th Birthday Celebration of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.
