A total of 84 Bruneian students will pursue higher education across various fields of study, including Islamic Shariah, Arabic Language, Usuluddin, and Takhassus Al-Quran Wal Qiraat at Al-Azhar University and Ma’ahad Qiraat Shoubra in the Arab Republic of Egypt for the 2026/2027 academic session.
Of the total, one student is a recipient of the prestigious Sultan’s Scholar scholarship scheme under Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, while two students have been awarded scholarships from the Ministry of Defence.
Another 16 students received scholarships from the Ministry of Religious Affairs (MoRA) through the Department of Islamic Studies, with the remaining 65 students pursuing their studies independently.
The first contingent, comprising 41 students, departed for Kuala Lumpur International Airport on September 20, 2026, aboard Royal Brunei Airlines flight BI873 before continuing their onward journey to Egypt.
Minister of Religious Affairs Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Haji Mohammad Tashim bin Pengiran Haji Hassan was present at the airport to send off the students.
Permanent Secretary at the MoRA Dr Haji Mohammed Hussain bin Pehin Penyurat Haji Ahmad, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Policy and Religious Affairs) at the MoRA Awang Haji Shamshol bin Haji Omar, Acting Director of Islamic Studies at the MoRA Hajah Mariana binti Haji Jamil, alongside assistant directors, senior officers from the Department of Islamic Studies, and family members were also present.
As part of the departure proceedings, a mass Asar and Sunnat Hajat prayers were held at the airport prayer hall, followed by the recitation of Doa Selamat.
The second group, comprising 43 students, left for Egypt on Monday at 5.45pm aboard Royal Brunei Airlines flight BI873.
