It was a moment to treasure for performers of this year’s Tutong District’s Get-Together ceremony with His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam held at the field of the community hall complex yesterday in conjunction with His Majesty’s 80th birthday celebration.
The theme of this year’s special performance is ‘Raja Bijaksana Inspirasi Rakyat’, while the performance concept is to celebrate the beauty of Malay cultural heritage and traditions as enduring symbols of national identity and cultural pride.
It embodies the spirit of unity, upholds the monarchy institution, and honours the monarch as the inspiration of the people in preserving the nation’s heritage, driving progress, and strengthening Brunei Darussalam’s peace, prosperity and well-being. The performance was divided into three main segments where the first segment was the opening performance in honour of His Majesty’s arrival. The second segment celebrated the nation’s cultural customs and traditions through a carefully arranged presentation of traditional musical compositions, qasidah chants, vocal performances, and traditional dances.
While the third and final segment served as the grand finale, featuring a contemporary interpretation of traditional pop music complemented by creative, dynamic, and energetic modern choreography. The fusion of traditional rhythms with contemporary musical arrangements created a majestic, vibrant and charismatic atmosphere.
A total of 384 participants joined in the special performance lasting 18 minutes.
Awangku Asmady bin Pengiran Sahdon, one of the participating dancers in the special performance shared, “It is a great honour and privilege to perform in front of His Majesty and the Royal Family. We feel incredibly happy, excited, and proud to be part of this very special and memorable celebration.” This year’s performance, he said,
“Celebrates the themes of unity, culture, and patriotism, and features three segments: Syair, Traditional, and Modern. A special highlight this year is the use of live music, creating a more vibrant and memorable performance. We also showcased Brunei’s rich cultural heritage through traditional costumes worn by the country’s ethnic communities. Primary and secondary school students, AJ Dancers, and musicians from Irama Bahtera, also participated in the special celebration.”
He also revealed, “We have been practicing for just over a month. While the preparations have been challenging, they have also been very rewarding, as everyone worked hard together to ensure a well-coordinated and memorable performance for this special occasion.”
He also expressed, “On behalf of all the performers, I would like to extend our heartfelt wishes to His Majesty on the occasion of His Majesty’s 80th Birthday. We are truly grateful for His Majesty’s care and dedication, and we wish His Majesty a joyous and memorable birthday celebration. Daulat Kebawah Duli Tuan Patik!” Meanwhile, one of the four singers who took centre stage, Hazimah Hamdan highlighted, “Alhamdulillah, performing in front of His Majesty and the Royal Family is an honour beyond words. It’s a mix of excitement and nerves, knowing that we are part of such an important celebration. I feel so proud to represent our community and be able to share our culture.”
She added, “We have an exciting lineup planned for this year, featuring a mix of classic and modern songs. We will start with ‘Syair Menjunjung Sembah,’ which I will be singing solo. The first segment will feature the ‘Junjung Beradat’ song, performed by Leehin and myself, bringing a sense of cultural pride to the stage. The second segment, ‘Duduk Beradab Madah Bersantun,’ will be performed by Minan and Maya. Finally, we will come together for a grand finale with the theme song ‘Raja Bijaksana Inspirasi Rakyat,’ where all four of us will join to create a powerful and memorable conclusion to the performance.”
“Our preparations began around three weeks ago. It’s been a rewarding journey, working together to refine our performances and develop our stage presence,” she said.
Greeting His Majesty, she said, “Your Majesty, on this special milestone of your 80th birthday, we celebrate not just your birthday but the incredible legacy you have built. May Allah the Almighty bless you a lifetime of health and happiness and continue to inspire us all for many more years to come.”
Another singer, Hajah Siti Noor Maya, who last performed at the Get-Together ceremony in 2010, is relishing the opportunity to return to the stage once again.
She expressed, “I feel a little nervous and also excited to be back on the stage again to perform for His Majesty and the Royal Family.”
She also extended birthday greetings to His Majesty, “I humbly extend my heartfelt wishes to His Majesty on the occasion of His Majesty’s 80th Birthday. May Allah the Almighty continue to bless His Majesty and the Royal Family with lasting good health, well-being, long life, and constant protection as well as abundant blessings.” – James Kon
