Deputy State Mufti Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Japar bin Haji Mat Dain @ Maidin, representing State Mufti Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri Setia (Dr) Ustaz Haji Awang Abdul Aziz bin Juned, yesterday departed for Phnom Penh, Cambodia, to attend the 4th ASEAN ‘Khair Ummah’ Conference.

Accompanying him was Istinbat Officer at the State Mufti Department, Prime Minister’s Office, Awang Abdul Hafiy bin Yahya.

The conference will be held from October 5 to 6 in Phnom Penh themed ‘Introducing Salafism and Its Merits in ASEAN Countries.’

Organised in collaboration between the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Da’wah and Guidance of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the authorities of the Royal Government of Cambodia, the conference focuses on the concept of moderation, or Wasatiyyah, and the role of Khair Ummah.

Some of the key areas of discussion include the importance of adopting the Wasatiyyah approach in matters of faith, worship and morality, as well as addressing challenges arising from modern thought.

The conference will also discuss ways to strengthen the role of Muslim minorities and official Islamic institutions in promoting peace and global harmony across the ASEAN region.

Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Islamic Affairs, Da’wah and Guidance, Sheikh Dr Abdullatif Al Alsheikh, is scheduled to chair this year’s conference, which is expected to bring together ministers, muftis, representatives from universities and Islamic associations, as well as religious and cultural leaders from ASEAN countries.
