Air quality moderate across all districts

Air quality moderate across all districts » Borneo Bulletin Online

Air quality remained at moderate levels across all four districts in Brunei Darussalam on Sunday morning, with Belait recording the highest Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) reading of 69 at 9am.

According to the Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation (JASTRe), the latest readings showed Brunei-Muara at 59, Tutong at 58 and Temburong at 52.

Earlier at 7am, Brunei-Muara recorded the highest reading of 64, followed by Belait and Temburong at 59 each, while Tutong registered 52.

The figures indicate that air quality in Brunei-Muara and Temburong improved slightly over the two-hour period, while readings increased in Belait and Tutong.

Despite these fluctuations, all four districts remained within the moderate category, which covers PSI readings between 51 and 100.

The Ministry of Health advised that outdoor activities may continue as usual under moderate air quality conditions, although children, pregnant women and the elderly should reduce strenuous or prolonged outdoor physical activities.

Individuals with heart or lung conditions are also advised to limit such activities.

Those experiencing persistent or worsening symptoms, including coughing, shortness of breath, chest discomfort or breathing difficulties, should seek immediate medical attention at nearby clinics or health centres.

JASTRe said the country’s air quality monitoring system has incorporated fine particulate matter (PM2.5) concentrations into PSI reporting since September 1.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), PM2.5 particles measure less than 2.5 micrometres in diameter and can penetrate deep into the lungs and enter the bloodstream, potentially affecting the respiratory and cardiovascular systems.

Authorities will continue monitoring air quality nationwide, with PSI updates issued five times daily at 7am, 9am, 11am, 2pm and 4pm throughout the hazy period.

Members of the public are urged to avoid open burning and other activities that could worsen haze conditions, particularly during the dry period.

Incidents involving bush or forest fires should be reported immediately to the Fire and Rescue Department through the emergency hotline 995.

Complaints concerning open burning, as well as requests for health information and advice, may be directed to the Darussalam Hotline at 123.
