Air quality moderate across districts

Air quality across all four districts in Brunei Darussalam was moderate at 9am Saturday, with Brunei-Muara recording the highest Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) reading of 80.

According to the Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation (JASTRe), Belait recorded a PSI of 66, followed by Tutong at 58 and Temburong at 57.

JASTRe, under the Ministry of Development, continues to monitor air quality during the hazy period, with PSI updates issued five times daily at 7am, 9am, 11am, 2pm and 4pm.

Since September 1, PM2.5 concentrations have been incorporated into Brunei’s PSI reporting to provide a more comprehensive assessment of air quality.

The World Health Organization defines PM2.5 as fine particulate matter measuring less than 2.5 micrometres in diameter. These particles can penetrate deep into the lungs and enter the bloodstream, potentially affecting cardiovascular and respiratory health.

A PSI reading below 50 indicates good air quality, while readings of 51 to 100 are classified as moderate. Readings of 101 to 200 indicate unhealthy air quality, 201 to 300 very unhealthy conditions, and above 300 hazardous conditions.
