Air quality remains good across Brunei after rainfall

Air quality across all four districts remained good on Monday morning, with recent rainfall helping to ease haze conditions, according to the Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation (JASTRe).

At 9am, the Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) stood at 21 in Brunei-Muara, 46 in Belait, 19 in Temburong and 50 in Tutong.

The department has incorporated fine particulate matter (PM2.5) concentrations into PSI reporting since September 1. These particles, measuring less than 2.5 micrometres in diameter, can penetrate deep into the lungs and enter the bloodstream, potentially affecting the cardiovascular and respiratory systems.

PSI readings below 50 indicate good air quality, while readings of 51 to 100 are moderate. Levels of 101 to 200 are considered unhealthy, 201 to 300 very unhealthy, and above 300 hazardous.

The public is advised against open burning and other activities that could worsen haze conditions during dry periods.

Any bush or forest fires should be reported immediately to the Fire and Rescue Department through its emergency hotline at 995. Complaints about open burning, as well as requests for health information and advice, can be directed to the Darussalam Hotline at 123.
