Air quality remains good nationwide

Air quality across all four districts remained at good levels yesterday morning following recent rainfall that helped ease haze conditions in Brunei Darussalam.

According to the Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation (JASTRe), the Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) readings recorded at 9am yesterday were 45 in Brunei-Muara, 24 in Belait, 33 in Temburong and 50 in Tutong.

The latest figures showed an improvement in Belait, where the PSI fell from 47 at 7am to 24 at 9am, while Temburong recorded a slight decrease from 35 to 33.

Brunei-Muara remained unchanged at 45, while Tutong’s reading increased from 30 to 50 over the same period.

Despite the fluctuations, all four districts were classified as having good air quality, according to the department’s latest advisory.

JASTRe said recent rainfall had helped reduce haze conditions nationwide, although members of the public were encouraged to continue monitoring air quality updates.

Since September 1, the country’s air quality reporting system has incorporated concentrations of fine particulate matter measuring less than 2.5 micrometres (PM2.5) into PSI calculations.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), PM2.5 particles can penetrate deep into the lungs and enter the bloodstream, potentially affecting the respiratory and cardiovascular systems.

Under the PSI classification, readings below 50 are considered good, while readings between 51 and 100 are moderate. Readings between 101 and 200 are classified as unhealthy, 201 to 300 as very unhealthy, and above 300 as hazardous.

During the hazy period, JASTRe will continue issuing air quality updates five times daily at 7am, 9am, 11am, 2pm and 4pm.

The public is advised to avoid open burning and other activities that could worsen haze conditions, particularly during dry weather.

Any incidents involving bush or forest fires should be reported immediately to the Fire and Rescue Department through its emergency hotline 995.

Complaints concerning open burning, as well as requests for health information and advice, can be directed to the Darussalam Hotline 123.
